Speaks Above Judging (SAJ)

Average difference between speaks awarded and the judge's average.

Updated September 27, 2024

Speaks Above Judging (SAJ) evaluates how a debater's speaker points compare to their judges' average scoring tendencies. It is calculated by taking the difference between the debater's aggregate speaker points and the judges' average speaker points. A positive SAJ score means the debater received higher-than-average speaker points compared to what the judges typically award, while a negative SAJ indicates they were scored lower. This metric helps identify whether a debater consistently outperforms or underperforms relative to the expectations set by the judges' usual scoring patterns.
